Music Theory 1 (Online) for Adults: Building Chords
This six-week course is the first of a set of courses designed for adult learners to develop and apply music theory skills for musical analysis and/or songwriting. The primary topic of this course will be chords. Students will learn how to play and identify triads (major, minor, diminished, and augmented), chord inversions, and seventh chords. Music examples will be drawn from both popular and classical music repertoire. Musical analysis and ear training assignments will support the material covered in class. Access to a keyboard or piano is recommended.

Music Theory 2 (Online) for Adults: The Circle of Fifths, Scales, and Modes
This six-week course focuses on the standard major and minor scales of the circle of fifths as well as pentatonic, blues, whole tone scales, and modes. Music examples will be drawn from popular music, jazz, and classical music repertoire. Assignments will provide opportunities for ear training and applying theoretical concepts at home. Access to a keyboard or piano is recommended.

Music Theory 3 (Online) for Adults: Chord Progressions and Chord Functions
In this six-week course, students will apply skills learned in Music Theory 1 and 2. The primary topics will include chord progressions and chord functions (tonic, dominant, pre-dominant, and secondary dominants). Music examples will be drawn from popular music, jazz, and classical music repertoire. Assignments will provide opportunities for practicing theoretical concepts at home. Access to a keyboard or piano is recommended.
